Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the type of taboo words in some posts of www.collegehumor.com and also identify the function of each taboo words. Descriptive qualitative approach is used on this study in order to collect and analyze the data. The theory of taboo words by Michael Swan is chosen to analyze the type of taboo words taken from some selected online posts from the website. As the result seven words found as lavatory kind of taboo words, ten words of sexual activity, five words as private parts of the body and five words under religious kind of taboo words. Meanwhile based on the theory of the function of taboo words by Liedlich, seven words are intended to create attention, eight words to create strong personal identification, two words to create a confrontation, one word to mock the authority and five words to show endearment. Key words : taboo words, descriptive qualitative, types of taboo words, functions of taboo words, and online posts.
