Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of the Flouting of Maxims in Rawson Marshall Thurber’s We’re the Millers Film” aims to identify the types of flouting maxim based on Grice’s Cooperative Principles theory and to explain the speaker’s purpose that were found in the utterances of this film. Cooperative Principles is a principle that directs people to get effective communication. In Cooperative Principles there is a flouting that has implied meaning from the speaker. Besides, context is a dynamic concept that allows the participants in the communication to interact. In this study, the qualitative method is chosen to support the writer in conducting the study in which Grice’s theory is used to analyze the flouting of maxims. The result of this study shows the types of flouting maxim and speaker’s purpose from the utterances used by the characters in We’re the Millers film.
