Abstract

This paper examines the use of deictic expressions in James Dashner’s “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” novel. The objectives of this study are to analyze types of deixis based on the theory of Yule (1996) and to find out its function that uttered by the main character. This study was conducted by using a qualitative approach. By using descriptive analysis as the technique of data analysis, there are three types of deixis found in James Dashner’s “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” novel, i.e. 18 person deixis, 17 spatial deixis, and 3 temporal deixis. Based on the utterances of the main character, the kinds of person deixis are you, we, it, she, he, and they. The spatial deixis found in the study are that, this, here, there, and go. Moreover, temporal deixis found in James Dashner’s “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” novel are now and last night.
