Abstract

This study aims at describing the use of Illocutionary Act in “The Fault in Our Stars” film’ script directed by Josh Boone. The writer used qualitative method that focused on the analysis of utterances, types and functions. A theory from Searle (1979) was chosen to analyze the types of illocutionary act. While a theory from Leech (1983) was chosen to support the analysis of types of illocutionary act based on context. Based on the result of the study, it was found 30 data of illocutionary act from “The Fault in Our Stars” film. The data were classified based on their types, functions and meanings based on the context. The writer found 9 Assertive which have the functions of stating and informing. There are 13 Directive data which have functions of command, asking, requesting and inviting. 5 expressive which have functions of happy, loving and condoling. 2 Commissive of wishing and refusing. There is 1 Declarative which has function of supporting. Keywords: Pragmatics, Speech Act, Illocutionary Act
