Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder of two major characters in “Room” novel by Emma Donoghue. It analizes the portray of PTSD, the effects it is impacted for the characters in their lives and the defense mechanisms of them are portrayed in the novel. In this study, the writer applies qualitative method. The writer uses the approach of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud (1895) and the theory of defense mechanism which also revealed by Freud in 1894. The result of this study shows that there are some PTSD symptoms portrayed by two major characters after they experienced traumatic events such as sadness, sleeping problem, irritability, fear and nightmare. The PTSD also gives effects to their lifes such as anhedonia, lose trust and depression which in the end cause suicide attempt. In order to cope the PTSD, they do some defense mechanisms.
