Abstract

This study deals with the analysis of performative utterances in “Eat Pray Love” novel by Elizabeth Gilbert. The objectives of this study are to find out types of performative utterance and to explain explicit and implicit meaning of those utterances. The study was carried out on descriptive qualitative design. The sources of the data were gained from the script of character’s dialogue that was found in the novel. The data were analyzed based on Austin’s theory. The result of this study showed that there were five types of performative utterances found in the novel namely; verdictives, exercitives, commissives, behabitives, and expositives. The dominant performative utterances that were found are exercitives and every performative utterance has either explicit or implicit meaning.
