Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the directive speech acts which are found in “Death Note Black Edition III” manga. In this study entitled “An Analysis of Forms and Functions of Directive Speech Acts in Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s Death Note Black Edition III manga”, the writer focused on the directive speech acts to get the data interpretation. Particularly, the study centralized on analyzing the forms and functions of the directive speech acts. This study applied the qualitative approach by employing the theory from Yule (1996) and Vanderveken (1990). The result of the study showed that the forms found in “Death NoteBlack Edition III” manga are mostly direct literal, followed by indirect literal and direct non literal. Furthermore, several functions such as requesting, commanding, advising, ordering, recommending, asking, forbidding, suggesting and warning are found in “Death NoteBlack Edition III” manga, and the most frequently functions found are requesting. From this study, it is concluded that the direct literal forms and requesting functions are often used to convey a message in communication.
