Abstract

A thesis entitled “Syntactical Analysis on The Prince and the Pauper Novel by Kathleen Olmstead” is the study to analyze the sentence structures found in The Prince and the Pauper novel by Kathleen Olmstead retold from the Mark Twain original story. This study aims to analyze and to identify the sentence structures with syntax approaches that are represented by tree diagram and labeled bracketing. As for the sentence structures found in this thesis is divided into four sentences such as simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound–complex sentence. The method used in analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative focusing on analyzing each sentence found in the novel. The data were taken from the English language novel entitled The Prince and the Pauper by Kathleen Olmstead based on the original author Mark Twain. Furthermore, in this study there are 20 chapters of this novel, but the writer only took 8 chapters namely chapter I until chapter VIII. After analyzing, the writer got the conclusions, there are 191 sentences found in this study. The simple sentences become the dominant sentences are found in the novel consisting of 99 sentences. In the second place is the complex sentences consisting of 42 sentences, the third place is the compound sentences consisting of 41 sentences, and the last is the compound–complex sentences consisting of 8 sentences. Thus, The Prince and the Pauper is the children literary work that is interesting to read and easy to understand the sentences with the sentence structures that exists in the novel.
