Abstract

The title of this study is Representation of Capital in The Great Gatsby novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald: A Sociology of Literature Perspective by Pierre Bourdieu.This study aims to analyze the capitalof the charactersinThe Great Gatsby novel. This study focuses on the capital concept depicted and the forms of capital represented in the characters which showhow the upper-class lifestyle is. The forms of capital concept by Pierre Bourdieu (1984) were used in analyzing the novel. Bourdieu states that capitalrepresentedthrough the property owned by an individual can be recognized as a symbol of capital in society.He argues that forms of capital aredivided into four terms: economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital. As the result of the study, it shows that Gatsby has all of the forms of capital based on his materials which are revealed by his lifestyle and defines his social class in society.Itis caused by his illegal business which makes himbecome a richman in that era.
