Abstract

It is important to know and to understand about idiomatic expression in order to be able to speak and communicate naturally like the natives do. Idiom has different meanings from its constituent words and the meanings cannot be inferred literally but it should be contextually. This study focuses on finding the types of the idioms and the contextual meanings of the idioms. The data were taken from “The Killing Breed” novel written by Mark Graham. This study uses qualitative method to analyze the data and the theory fromMakkai in his article entitled “On Redefining Idiom” in Lacus Forum 36 Compilation Journal (2011). There are five idiomaticity areas of idiom according to Adam Makkai in his article which are phonetic, phonemic, morphemic, lexemic and sememic idioms. Lexemic area is the focus of this study. In lexemic area, he further divides idioms into several types which are phrasal verb idiom, tournure idiom, nominal combination (compound idiom), and phraseological idiom of encoding.
