Abstract

Taboo Words are one of language phenomena of that exist in society although these words are forbidden to be spoken. Taboo words can be found not only in everyday conversation, but also in literary works such as novels, magazines, and movies. This study is aimed at analyzing types of taboo words and their functions used in Paper Town novel. The study uses descriptive qualitative approach to collect and analyze the data of taboo words. The types of taboo word are analyzed using theory by Allan, Burridge, and Swann and then functions of taboo are analyzed based on Liedich, and Wardaugh. Based on the analysis, there are 30 taboo words analyzed which are divided into 10 types (Private of the Body, Sexual Activity, Religious, Profanity, Epithet, Cursing, Lavatory, Vulgarity, Obscenity, Name Calling) and swear words (Blasphemy and Slurs). The dominant type of taboo words is Religious. Besides, functions of taboo words are mostly to create attention. Key words : sociolinguistic, taboo words, descriptive qualitative, types of taboo words, functions of taboo words, and dialogues.
