Abstract

This study is aimed at defining the importance of efferent and aesthetic response of the readers in interpreting the literary work in By the Waters of Babylon and A Siberian Shepherd’s Report of the Atom Bomb short stories. This study used qualitative approach. It applied the transactionbetween the reader and the text from Louise M. Rosenblatt, in which the efferent reading and the aesthetic reading are needed in responding the literary work. The result of this study showed that in the efferent reading, the reader is able to findthe historical and the social knowledge from the story, moreover, in the aesthetic reading, the readeris able to see the domination occurs and involving her personal perspectives in interpreting the literary work.
