Abstract
The study investigates the Corleone Family in“The Godfather” novelusing the Michel Foucault’s theory of disciplinary power in order to find out how exactlythe Family members manage to survive with theirfeet in the two opposed realms of the normal American society and its underworld crime society. In doing this, it traces in the Family the characteristics of the two techniques of disciplinary power: the spatial arrangement and the hierarchical observation.Theanalysis of these two techniques reveals piece by piece the detailed spatial and operational aspects of the Corleone Family and how they participate in creating a system that is powered by disciplinary power. At the end of the analysis, it turns out that the disciplinary power with its techniques generates the panoptic situationand creates an effect of loyalty. These are how the disciplinary powerbinds the whole Family together, increases the efficiency and the effectiveness of its operations, and ultimately sustains its existence. Keywords: power, disciplinary power, panopticism, mafia
