Abstract

This study aims to analyze the issue of gender inequality depicted in the film Women Talking (2022), which tells the story of a group of women who face systemic oppression in a patriarchal religious colony. Using a qualitative method, this study examines how the film depicts various forms of gender inequality, and explores the women’s struggle to resist and reclaim their autonomy. The analysis is guided by Simone De Beauvoir’s (1949) gender theory, particularly her concept of women as “the Other”, which helps uncover the film’s deeper meanings of women’s subordination and existential freedom. The study highlights that gender inequality in the film is not only personal but also structural, affecting women’s ability to speak, decide and live freely. The results reveal that the film depicts the forms of gender inequality, including socialization, education, marriage, and sexuality, all deeply rooted in tradition and male dominance. Moreover, the film also portrays the struggle of the female characters with intellectual growth through collective discussion, critical thinking, and self�actualization through the decision to leave the colony to reclaim their agency that showing how resistance becomes a pathway to autonomy and transformation.
