Abstract

This study aims to examine the patriarchal issues presented in Jennifer Saint’s novel Ariadne. This study explores how patriarchal structures and values are embedded within the novel, shaping the experiences and struggles of its female characters. Using Sylvia Walby’s (1991) framework of patriarchy, the research identifies both private and public aspects of patriarchal influence, illustrating the ways in which these systems limit and define women’s roles, autonomy, and relationships. This study employs a qualitative research method, with analysis focusing on both the textual narrative and character interactions that reveal underlying patriarchal norms. By examining the portrayal of female characters like Ariadne, as well as the dynamics between male and female characters, this study sheds light on the oppressive gender dynamics within the mythological retelling. The findings suggest that patriarchal elements are deeply ingrained in the narrative structure and contribute to the perpetuation of traditional gender roles, limiting the agency and autonomy of women within the story.
