Abstract

This study explores the representation of beauty stereotypes in 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad and their impact on the protagonist’s personal development. Using a qualitative approach, the study examines how idealized beauty standards shaped by culture, media, and social norms contribute to Lizzie’s struggle with body image, self-esteem, and identity. Based on Naomi Wolf’s (1990) Beauty Myth, the analysis reveals that beauty stereotypes not only distort notions of physical attractiveness but also generate emotional and psychological consequences for individuals who fail to meet societal ideals. The study highlights how these stereotypes manifest in various dimensions of Lizzie’s life, including her inner self-concept, familial expectations, and broader social interactions. The conclusion of this study indicates that beauty stereotypes heavily influence Lizzie’s life, who strives to conform to the idealized image upheld by society. The writer recommends further study into the emerging conflicts related to beauty stereotypes depicted in this novel, as well as providing useful insight for readers and researchers interested in similar topics.
