Abstract

This study aims to analyze the theme of women's struggle against violence as depicted in the novel Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors. It explores the main character Cleo's experiences in facing various forms of violence, including physical, psychological, structural, and cultural and how she responds to them throughout the story. The research focuses on identifying how gender-based violence affects women's lives emotionally and socially, especially in intimate relationships. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method and relies on library research to present the results in essay form. To guide the analysis, the writer uses Johan Galtung's (1969) theory of violence, distinguishing between direct and indirect violence, and James C. Scott (1985) theory of resistance to understand how the protagonist copes with and recovers from violence. The findings reveal that Cleo experiences multiple layers of harm, including emotional neglect, gaslighting, sexual harassment, and power imbalances. These acts of violence are not only personal but also reflect broader societal expectations placed upon women. Furthermore, the study shows that Cleo responds to violence through both disguised resistance, such as emotional withdrawal, false compliance, and self-protection, and open resistance, such as leaving harmful relationships and reclaiming her autonomy. These actions demonstrate her resilience in navigating oppressive dynamics. This research highlights how literature can portray women’s inner struggles and offers insights into the psychological impact of violence and the complex strategies of resistance used for survival and recovery.
