Abstract

This study aims to reveal the trauma experienced by the main character and how to recover from the trauma in the novel Calling For A Blanket Dance (2023) by Oscar Hokeah. Published in 2023, Ever Geimausaddle, a native American protagonist who struggles with the trauma, navigates pain and resilience, and ultimately recovers from trauma. Through a multi-perspective narrative, Ever is portrayed as dealing with trauma that arises through several events. The writer used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to analyze data collected from various quotations and events in the novel. This study is focused on Cathy Caruth's (1996) trauma theory to develop the analysis, which explores how traumatic experiences are portrayed in Calling for a Blanket Dance. Based on the analysis, a variety of trauma are depicted in the novel. The results show there are four symptoms of traumatic experiences: flashback, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and avoidance. Additionally, the study highlights various responses and actions to recover from trauma, including community support and connecting families, and storytelling.
