Abstract

This study explores the subversion of gender stereotypes as portrayed in three selected picture books: Franny’s Father is a Feminist (2018) by Rhonda Leet, Mary Wears What She Wants (2019) by Keith Negley, and My Shadow is Purple (2022) by Scott Stuart. Drawing on Judith Butler’s (1990) theory of gender performativity, the research examines how these books depict traditional gender stereotypes and how their characters subvert them. Through a qualitative approach, this study analyzes the narrative and illustrative elements of each book. The findings reveal that these picture books subvert traditional norms by illustrating characters who defy rigid gender roles, encouraging readers to embrace individuality and equality.
