Abstract

This study focuses on examining the classification of the signs found in WOODZ’s music videos “Abyss” and “Journey” and analyzing how the emotions of sorrow in the music video “Abyss” and hope in “Journey” are represented in both videos. This study utilized Charles Sanders Peirce’s (1933) theory of the triadic model and descriptive-qualitative research. This study reveals that there are 48 data found in WOODZ’s music videos “Abyss” and “Journey.” The sign is classified into six sign classes, including rhematic‑symbolic‑legisign, argument‑symbolic‑legisign, rhematic‑indexical‑sinsign, dicent‑indexical‑sinsign, rhematic‑iconic‑qualisign, and rhematic‑iconic‑sinsign. The findings show that “Abyss” displays more rhematic-symbolic-legisigns and rhematic-indexical-sinsigns than “Journey,” and it is the only video that displays dicent-indexical-sinsigns. In addition, rhematic�iconic-qualisigns and a rhematic-iconic-sinsign only appear in “Journey.” Furthermore, the emotions of sorrow in the music videos for "Abyss" are represented by the old and large mansion, the young man alone in the small room, and the young man's limp posture on the ground. In addition, the use of visual elements and song lyrics in both music videos serves to represent the emotions of sorrow and hope of the young man's emotional journey from being lost in the dark to embarking on a new and bright journey.
