Abstract

The aim of this study is to explores the theme of domestic violence in the novel The Agathas by Kathleen Glasgow and Liz Lawson (2022). It examines how domestic violence is portrayed through the experiences of the main character, Iris Adams, and her mother, who endure both physical and psychological abuse from Iris's father. The study employs Zastrow’s theory of domestic violence to analyze the various forms of abuse depicted in the narrative, including the cycle of violence and its impact on the victims' mental and emotional well-being. The findings reveal that domestic violence not only results in physical injuries but also leaves lasting psychological scars, leading to trauma and fear. The study highlights the importance of social support and legal intervention in helping victims escape abusive situations. By comparing the portrayal of domestic violence in The Agathas with other literary works, the study underscores the complex dynamics of power and control in abusive relationships and the resilience of victims in their journey towards recovery.
