Abstract

This study aims to examine and compare signs at two stations based on their type along with their language display and function to increase knowledge and increase public language awareness of signs in public spaces. This study has an object to identify signs included in the category of sign types in the linguistic landscape, namely private signs and government signs along with their language display and analyze the function of signs which are divided into two, namely informational functions and symbolic functions. This study focuses on signs such as road signs, shop names, advertisements, regulations and prohibitions displayed at two stations, namely Ciracas LRT and Halim Whoosh Station. This study uses the theory from of Landry and Bourhis (1997) with a qualitative approach. Also, uses Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) method to determine the differences in the characteristics of signs at the two stations. This study groups data based on place, first at Ciracas LRT Station which consists of 89 types of signs consisting of 4 private signs and 85 government signs which are grouped into 5 monolingual signs and 84 bilingual signs. Then, the function of signs includes 87 symbolic functions and 89 informational functions. Meanwhile, Halim Whoosh Station has 89 signs, consisting of 24 private signs and 65 government signs grouped into 2 monolingual signs and 72 bilingual signs. In addition, the function of the signs includes 86 symbolic functions and 85 informational functions. In general, the signs at the two stations do not have special characteristics that make a difference, only there is a slight difference in language variations at Halim Whoosh Station in the type of private signs. Thus, this study can provide broader insight into signs that are not just instructions but can be a representation of a region through existing language.
