Abstract

This study analyzes the representation and impact of beauty myths in three selected children's picture books: Freckleface Strawberry (2007), My Beautiful Hair (2016), and Not Quite Snow White (2019). Using qualitative methods and Naomi Wolf’s Beauty Myth theory (2002), the study explores how beauty standards are conveyed through narrative, dialogue, and visual elements in these books, and how they shape children’s perception of self and identity. The results show that beauty myths are represented through characters who face social judgment due to physical traits like freckles, curly or colored hair, and skin tone. These books reveal how beauty myths are internalized by children at an early age, leading to feelings of inadequacy and efforts to conform. However, the findings also highlight a shift toward positive representation, as each character eventually challenges beauty stereotypes and moves toward self-acceptance. This suggests that picture books can both reinforce and resist dominant beauty norms, influencing how young readers construct self-worth and identity.
