Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of the beauty myth issue and figurative language found in selected poems by Tony Hoagland, including Beauty (1998), Windchime (2003), and Hostess (2006). The theory used to analyze the issue is the beauty myth theory by Naomi Wolf (2009). This study uses a qualitative method, as the analysis is presented in essay form and the data consists of texts. The findings of this study show that the issue of the beauty myth in Tony Hoagland’s selected poems is influenced by beauty standards determined by society. These selected poems portray how women strengthening, challenging, and even breaking the beauty standards. In Windchime (2003), the female character is depicted as a hard worker without concerning herself with appearance or societal beauty standards, proving that she challenging and breaking them. In Hostess (2006), Hoagland tells the story of a hostess with extraordinary beauty whose elegant dress draws everyone’s attention, illustrating the results of strengthening beauty standards. Meanwhile, Beauty (1998) tells the story of a woman who struggles to meet beauty standards but eventually lives more freely by challenging and breaking away from those societal pressures. Furthermore, the figurative language in Tony Hoagland’s selected poems helps to emphasize the issue of the beauty myth and provides a clearer depiction of the characters. Overall, Beauty (1998), Windchime (2003), and Hostess (2006) by Tony Hoagland explore how the main characters either challenge, reinforce, or dismantle the demands of beauty standards in society.
