Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and meanings of onomatopoeia found in the Batman: Wayne Family Adventures Webtoon. The analysis is based on Ullmann’s (1962) theory, which classifies onomatopoeia into two categories: primary and secondary onomatopoeia. To interpret the meanings, both conceptual based on the literal meaning and associative based on the context, the study applies Yule’s (2006) theory. Primary onomatopoeia refers to words that directly imitate natural sounds, while secondary onomatopoeia involves sounds associated with movements or symbolic meanings. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, as the data consists of visual and textual representations from the webtoon. The analysis was conducted on ten selected episodes of Batman: Wayne Family Adventures and identified a total of 26 onomatopoeic expressions. Of these, 13 were classified as primary and 13 as secondary onomatopoeia. The findings reveal that onomatopoeic words are used not only to represent sounds but also to convey emotions, enhance storytelling, and support character interactions.
