Abstract
Song lyrics are the textual elements found in music. They reflect the central idea, emotion, and narrative of the piece, frequently sharing a message or sentiment that the writer aims to communicate to the listener. However, at times, the arrangement of these lyrics can be puzzling, particularly for those who are not familiar with the concept of poetic license. Therefore, this study explores the associative meanings found in Anne-Marie's album Therapy, aiming to identify the types of associative meanings and their communicative functions within the lyrics. By employing a descriptive qualitative approach along with Leech's (1981) theory of associative meaning, the study examines the lyrics to classify the associative meanings. The results indicate that affective meaning is the most common, with 26 data noted, followed by connotative meaning at 16 data, social/stylistic meaning at 14 data, collocative meaning at 2 data, and reflective meaning at 2 data as well. In terms of their communicative roles, the expressive function stands out with 50 data, the aesthetic function appears 9 data, and the directive function is noted once and no informational or phatic functions were found. These findings imply that AnneMarie's Therapy album mainly aims to convey feelings and personal experiences, showing the artist's desire to emotionally engage with listeners. The limited occurrence of other communicative functions points to a concentrated thematic analysis of personal and emotional stories, enhancing the album's therapeutic quality.
