Abstract

This study aims to analyse the experience of racial prejudice depicted in Esperanza's life and experienced by the main character in the novel Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. Using Gordon W. Allport's (1954) theory of racial prejudice. This theory explains how racial prejudice has several categories in its actions and then provides a way to respond to prejudice with its methods. this study provides results of several categories in negative actions of prejudice and ways of responding to racial prejudice with conformity. In conclusion, this novel describes the development of Esperanza who faces racial prejudice and tries to understand racial prejudice and the negative actions from it and then responds by realizing and accepting her situation.
