Abstract

News articles are a form of delivering information quickly and accurately. Besides to providing information, it can also add to a person's insight related to the vocabulary displayed in a variety of ways. Therefore, this study examined the derivational affixes found on Fox News articles by several authors with the aim of identifying the types of derivational affixes and displaying the form of a tree diagram for each type of derivational affix to clarify the word class. In this study, the author was supported by the theory of Katamba-Stonham (2006) and the theory of Lieber (2009), using a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of this study revealed that each type of derivational affix, such as prefixes, suffixes, and circumfixes, was found in 15 data, with a total of 45 data from FOX News articles. In the form of a tree diagram, the word class changes in suffixes were found: 2 data from adjective to adverb, 2 data from adjective to noun, 4 data from verb to noun, 2 data from adverb to noun, and 5 data from noun to adjective. Circumfixes were found in 3 data from noun to adjective, 6 data from adjective to adverb, 4 data from verb to adjective, and 5 data from verb to noun. Changes in word class in prefixes were found in only 1 data, from adjective to noun. Thus, this study concluded that suffixes and circumfixes were the most dominant affixes that experienced changes in word class, as found in the FOX News articles.
