Abstract

The aim of this study is to discuss the grammatical ambiguity in The Time Machine novel by using tree diagram theory of syntax and finding the causes of grammatical ambiguity in the novel. To support the study, the writer used the theory of Noam Chomsky (1957) for syntax theory, Rodman and Fromkin (1983) for grammatical ambiguity and Radford (1988) for tree diagram. Those theories were used because of their extensive and detailed sources to solve the problems. The writer uses qualitative method to analyse the data findings. The result of the study shows that, there were 30 data found regarding potentially grammatical ambiguity, those occurs because of modifier placement, such as Adjective phrases, Adverb Phrases, Verb phrase, Conjunction and Preposition Phrases, which can be as an adjuncts or complements in the novel. It includes Prepositional Phrases (PP) occurs 17 times, the Conjunctions (Conj) occurs 9 times, the Adverb Phrases (AdvP) occurs 2 times, the Adjective Phrases (AdjP) occurs 1 time and the Verb Phrases (VP) occurs 1 time. In conclusion, The Time Machine novel is one of the novels that potentially has grammatical ambiguity. Key word: Linguistics, Grammatical Ambiguity and The Time Machine Novel
