Abstract

This study aims at analyzing on denotative and connotative meanings of Creed’s song lyrics and finding the dominant words of denotative and connotative in those selected lyrics. The data of this analysis were collected by choosing some lyrics in Creed’s songs that tend to have meaningful words or phrases so that the writer was much easier to analyze them into denotative and connotative meanings. The songs chosen entitled; My Sacrifice, Don’t Stop Dancing, One Last Breath, My Own Prison, and What's this Life for. Through descriptive approched, the data of denotative and connotative meanings were adoped based on the theories from Harimurti (2010) and Hook (1989). The analysis result shows that there are has dominant words of denotative and connotative meanings found on the lyrics of Creed’s songs are the word “Fly”. This word was found on lyrics of My Sacrifice and Don’t Stop Dancing. Another word is the word “light” which is found on lyrics of Don’t Stop Dancing and My Own Prison. The word “thunder” is found on lyrics of One Last Breath and My Own Prison.The word “Eyes” is found on lyrics of My Sacrifice and One Last Breath. Some words or phrases become denotative meanings, some may be connotative meanings, and the rest may be neutral. Keywords : Linguistics, Semantic, Denotative, Connotative, Song, Lyrics.
