Abstract

Male domination remains an enduring social issue and a subject of ongoing debate within society. This pervasive phenomenon often triggers acts of resistance and liberation by women striving to achieve their rightful place and autonomy. Beyond its prevalence in real-life contexts, this issue is also vividly portrayed in the film The Invitation, written by Blair Butler and directed by Jessica M. Thompson. This article employs a film study approach to analyse the issue of male domination through narrative and cinematographic elements. The theoretical framework for this discussion draws on Simone de Beauvoir’s book The Second Sex (2011), which examines the manifestations of male dominance and the strategies women must adopt to overcome it. The findings reveal that male domination manifests in various forms, including patriarchal systems, gender roles and expectations, and objectification. These oppressive behaviours, in turn, incite acts of resistance and pave the way for liberation.
