Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the issue of identity crisis in children's literature that occurs in picture books represented by characters through showing the characteristics when they experience identity crisis and also how to overcome the issue. The objects in this study are two picture books entitled Edward the Emu (1988) by Sheena Knowles and Spoon (2009) by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. To limit the study of identity crisis in characters, this study only uses the fifth stage of Erikson’s (1968) development stages of life theory. The methodology of the study used by writer in analyzing data in the form of pictures and texts is qualitative descriptive. The results found by the writer are in the two selected picture books. There are three depictions of identity crisis, which are feeling useless, clueless on living, and lose of self-confidence. Then, depiction of cope with identity crisis is the important of family role and open-minded social environment. Both of picture books show the characters experience the identity crisis and achieve their identity.
