Abstract

This study aims to explain the instability of gender identity experienced by the main character, Julian Pinchbeck / Julia Snyde/ Diane Dare in Gentlemen & Players novel written by Joanne Harris in 2006. The writer analyzes the instability of gender identity in a grammar school for boys called St. Oswald’s, the old private school with a big “no trespassers” sign and full of mystery. Through reading the novel Gentlemen & Players (Harris, 2006). The writer notices the instability of gender identity as the issue portrayed in the novel. The main character is found being called he/him/his in the early chapter, and she/her/hers in the middle to last chapter while facing the instability of gender identity beginning with masculinity, femininity and combining both as androgyny. The results of this study prove that gender is constructed by society, gender is unstable and can keep changing towards feeling love and hate emotion which leads to revenge for justice action. Even turning an innocent being into a murderer.
