Abstract

This study examines the sentence structure of news articles through the application of tree diagrams, which visually represent the hierarchical grammatical structure of sentences by dividing them into their constituent elements, such as noun phrases (NP) and verb phrases (VP). The object of analysis is a news article from The Guardian titled "Everything Everywhere All at Once Triumphs at Oscars with Major Sweep," written by Benjamin Lee and published on March 13, 2023. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this study applies Burton-Roberts' (2011) theoretical framework for sentence structure analysis and Oshima and Hogue's (1998) classification of sentence types. The analysis systematically deconstructs each sentence to identify its syntactic components and structural patterns. Furthermore, the sentence structure found in each sentence consists of a wide variety of phrases that make some of the sentence structures more complicated. The findings reveal the presence of 15 simple sentences, 5 compound sentences, 1 complex sentence, and 2 compound-complex sentences. Furthermore, the tree diagram representations illustrate that each sentence contains a verb phrase (VP) as the predicate and a noun phrase (NP) as the subject, offering a comprehensive insight into the syntactic organization of the text.
