Abstract

Mourning Becomes Electra trilogy is the title of drama inspired by Greek tragedy written by the American poet, Eugene O'Neill. In Mourning Becomes Electradrama trilogy, the author presents an overview of the destruction of a family because of the element of pleasure, adultery, murder and revenge. This study is aimed at describing the background of the Oedipus and Electra Complex on some characters and to find out the instinct that influencecharactersof the Oedipus and Electra Complex. The writing is focused on the viewpoint of Sigmund Freud psychoanalysis was referring directly to the concept of Oedipus and Electra Complex. The writer obtained data from drama script as the main source. The results showed that the background that led to the Oedipus and Electra Complex is existence of inharmonious and disappointment in a marriage, which cause irregularities in distributing the passion of love, resulting in the emergence of the instinct of death as suicide by remorse, grief and destruction on a few characters because of hatred and jealousy. In addition, the result of the analysis also shows clearly that two family members showed psychological disorders, namely the Oedipus and Electra Complex. In fact, the superego, which should control the ego, is not able to withstand the turmoil id. As a result, they perform acts that they should notdo.
