Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is aimed to analyze “A Friend of the Earth” novel written by T.C.Boyle using Russian Formalism theory of Victor Skhlovskyincludesfabula, sjuzet, and defamiliarization. Fabulais the raw material of every story which the events are chronology while sjuzetismodification of raw material by the author to make the story more interesting through changing the events in flashback or non-linear. In changing the fabulaintosjuzet, the author uses defamiliarizationconcept which changes something familiar becomes unfamiliar. The purposes of this study are to analyze the plot generally, analyze the fabulaandsjuzet, also to find out the way the author defamiliarizes or makes strange the story. The method used by the writer is descriptive kualitative method while the source is taken from “A Friend of the Earth” novel. The result shows that fabulain “A Friend of the Earth” novel is the events between 1989 to 2026 whereas the sjuzetbegins in 2026 then flashback to 1989. The result also shows that there are some defamiliarization aspects used by the author. Keywords: Russian Formalism, fabula, sjuzet, defamiliarization.
