Abstract

The title of this study is "Traumatic Experiences in Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous." Using Cathy Caruth's trauma theory from Unclaimed Experience, this study analyzes how traumatic events are portrayed in Ocean Vuong's book On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. Little Dog, his mother Rose, and grandmother Lan all suffered from intergenerational trauma as a result of their experiences as Vietnamese immigrants in the United States. This is the main focus of the analysis. Through qualitative research, this study identifies and classifies coping mechanisms like storytelling and bearing witness, as well as traumatic elements like flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and avoidance. The results show how the characters' psychological anguish and disjointed memories highlight the widespread effects of trauma and how it shapes resilience, relationships, and identity.
