Abstract

This study examined the oppression of women in The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek (2019) by Kim Michele Richardson, focusing on the struggles of the protagonist, Cussy Mary Carter, who faced discrimination due to her gender and rare blue skin condition. The research explored how women's oppression was depicted in the novel and how the main character resisted it. Using Sylvia Walby’s feminist theory from Theorizing Patriarchy (1990) and a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzed the various forms of oppression experienced by the protagonist. The findings identified three major aspects of oppression: physical, social, and gender-based. The results revealed that the novel critiqued systemic gender inequality, showing how patriarchal norms restricted women’s autonomy. Cussy Mary’s resilience as a traveling librarian reflected her resistance against these oppressive structures, highlighting the broader struggle for women's rights and empowerment.
