Abstract

This study examines the representation of sadomasochism in E.L. James's Fifty Shades novels, including Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed. The research focuses on the types and factors of sadomasochism depicted in the main characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. By employing B.F. Skinner's behaviorism theory and referencing Different Loving by Gloria Brame and William Brame, this qualitative descriptive study analyzes dialogues, narratives, and character dynamics to explore how reinforcement and punishment shape the characters' behaviors and preferences. The findings reveal the fundamental factors influencing the protagonists' sadomasochistic tendencies, as well as the types of sadomasochism portrayed. This study contributes to academic discourse on sexuality in literature, offering insights into the psychological complexities behind unconventional relationships.
