Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of racial discrimination depicted and how the main character deals with it in the novel The East Indian by Brinda Charry (2023). The novel tells the journey of Tony, a boy from the Coromandel Coast, India, who is brought to England and then kidnapped to Virginia in the 17th century to become a slave. He faces discrimination and forced labor, but later works for a doctor, learns medicine, and befriends other workers, including Lydia who becomes his wife. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to analyze the data collected from various quotations and events in the novel. This study focuses on Fred L. Pincus in Race and Ethnic Conflict: Contending Views, on Prejudice, Discrimination, and Ethnoviolence (1998) theory of racial discrimination. The results of this study show that racial discrimination depicted in the novel occurs in three forms of racial discrimination: individual discrimination, institutional discrimination, and structural discrimination. Individual discrimination refers to the behavior of certain members of a group that has harmful intentions towards members of another racial group that is different from them. Institutional discrimination refers to the harmful behavior against a minority group by the policies of major institutions. Structural discrimination arises when discrimination is built into social structures and causes systemic injustice to certain groups. In addition, this study shows the main character dealing with racial discrimination, including resigned acceptance and verbal confrontation.
