Abstract

This study is entitled Childhood Trauma in the novel The Bread the Devil Knead This study discusses the depiction of childhood trauma and how the main character deals with it in the novel The Bread the Devil Knead by Lisa Allen-Agostini (2021). Therefore, this study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe, analyze, and interpret narrative elements to build an understanding of trauma and how the main character deals with it. This study utilizes theories from Trauma: Explorations in Memory by Cathy Caruth (1995) as the framework and basic concept of the study. The result shows that there are 3 childhood traumatic experiences such as physical, sexual and emotional abuse and 3 stages of the protagonist's defense mechanism such as avoidance, denial and acceptance in dealing with her childhood trauma in the novel.
