Abstract

This study analyses the use of adjacency pairs in the film script of “A Man Called Otto.” Qualitative research methods were used in this study, along with the theoretical framework Levinson (1983) developed to identify and examine the types and patterns of conversational pairs present in the dialogues. The data were analyzed and categorized to fulfil the objectives of the study, namely: analyzing the types and patterns of conversation used in the film. The analysis revealed 64 data points, consisting of 9 conversation types, which can be categorized into two different types: preferred patterns and dispreferred patterns. The question-answer pair appears as the most common type, accounting for 31 times, while the least common types are suggestion-acceptance/rejection for a time and apology-minimization, represented by 2 times. Meanwhile, the other types: offer - acceptance/refusal 7 times, blame - admission/denial 3 times, greeting - greeting 4 times, assessment - agreement/refusal 10 times, command - compliance/incompliance 2 times, request - acceptance/refusal 4 times. The findings provide insights into the conversational dynamics and interaction structures in the script while enhancing the understanding of dialogue pragmatics in film storytelling.
