Abstract

The title of this study is "Traumatic Experiences in Alexandra Villasante's The Grief Keeper." Using Cathy Caruth's trauma theory from Unclaimed Experience (1996), this study analyzes how traumatic experiences are depicted in The Grief Keeper. The main focus of this analysis is on Marisol Morales, a young asylum seeker who faces trauma resulting from displacement, cultural alienation, and past violence in her homeland. Through qualitative research, this study identifies and classifies traumatic elements such as emotional instability, disorientation in identity, dissociation, and somatic responses. Additionally, coping mechanisms like storytelling, bearing witness, and acknowledging fragmentation are explored as essential steps in the trauma recovery process. The results demonstrate how trauma disrupts the characters’ sense of self and highlights the importance of resilience, memory, and recovery in rebuilding identity.
