Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics and factors influencing speech disfluency exhibited by Elon Musk in three episodes of TED Talks. Using a qualitative approach, data were obtained from TED Talks videos titled "The Mind Behind Tesla, SpaceX, SolarCity" (2013), "Elon Musk: The Future We're Building is Boring" (2017), and "Elon Musk Talks Twitter, Tesla and How His Brain Works" (2022). Data analysis was conducted based on Clark & Clark's (1977) theory of speech disfluency types and Bortfeld et al.'s (2001) framework on contributing factors. The findings reveal five types of speech disfluency: filled pauses, repetitions, corrections, silent pauses, and false starts. Each type is characterized by its position within sentences and specific forms of utterance. Factors influencing speech disfluency include situational anxiety, cognitive reasons, and social reasons. Disfluencies often arise due to the complexity of the information being conveyed, social interactions with the audience, and psychological pressure during public speaking. This study contributes to the field of psycholinguistics by providing new insights into identifying and understanding speech disfluency in non-formal communication. The findings can also serve as a reference for developing speech therapy interventions for individuals with speech disorders and improving public speaking skills.
