Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing women’s speech features used four selected characters in Mean Girls film. It is aims at finding out the types of women’s speech features used by four selected characters in the film and analyzing the function of speech features are used. The method used to analyze the data was descriptive qualitative method while the theory of women’s speech features by Robin Tolmach Lakoff (1975) was applied to identify the types and the function of women’s speech features. From the data analysis, it was found that there were seven types of women’s speech features in the Mean Girls film, they are ; Tag question, Empty adjectives, Hedges, Intensifier, Emphatic stress, Super polite forms and Avoidance of strong swear words. Meanwhile, three other kinds, are not applied by the characters, those are Rising intonation on declaratives, Precise color terms, and Hypercorrect grammar.
