Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the sentence structure of the news article formulated in a tree diagram. The object of this study was taken from the news article in the Sydney Morning Herald in the SMH application on mobile phones published by the Sydney Morning Herald written by Daniella White in the Sydney Morning Herald. The news articles chosen for analysis were the news article entitled “War in Gaza tests free speech limits at Sydney University” and “Two- state solution the only way to end conflict, Biden tells Netanyahu”. This study used qualitative methods because the analysis was presented in text in images. Furthermore, the writer used the theory of Noel Burton-Roberts (2011) to analyze the sentence structure in the news article using a tree diagram. Meanwhile, the writer used the theory of Alice and Oshima (1998) to analyze sentence types. The study found that all types of sentences existed in the news article “War in Gaza tests free speech limits at Sydney University” and “Two-state solution the only way to end conflict, Biden tells Netanyahu”. The writer analyzes 31 sentences. The types of sentences found were simple sentences with 8 patterns, which focus on NP as a subject and also as an object; compound sentences with 7 patterns, which focus on VP; complex sentences with 14 patterns, which focus on subordinators; and compound-complex sentence with 2 patterns, which focus on NP and VP. In the pattern and the tree diagram, the most common patterns in all sentence types are NP (Noun Phrase) as subject and as object in the sentence, VP (Verb Phrase), and PP (Prepositional Phrase).This study concluded that the sentence structures in the selected news article from Sydney Morning Herald were diverse and utilized the variety of sentence types. The analysis revealed the presence of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, with common sentence patterns emphasizing noun phrase (NP) as both the subject and object, verb phrase (VP), and prepositional phrase (PP). These findings highlight the complexity of sentence structures used in news reporting, particularly focusing on the roles of different phrases in conveying information.
