Abstract

With an emphasis on how language is modified in online fan communities to improve communication, this study investigates the linguistic phenomenon of word formation process inside the BTS ARMY Dictionary. The study aims to identify types of word formation processes and analyze their meanings, both referential and associative, as they appear in the BTS ARMY Dictionary. The study used a descriptive qualitative method, systematically collecting data from the BTS ARMY Dictionary, a lexicon created by the BTS fan community since 2018. The data were analyzed using Yule's (2020) theory of word formation, which includes processes such as compounding, coinage, acronyms, and blending. Additionally, the meanings of the words were categorized into referential and associative meanings to provide insight into their linguistic and cultural significance. The findings reveal that coinage is the most dominant word formation process gaining for 39,2% of the data, followed by compounding 28,5%, with derivation 14,5%, clipping contributing 10,7%, and borrowing 7,1%. It is also found that Referential meanings provide the literal definition of these terms, while associative meanings highlight the community's contextual understanding and creativity.
