Abstract
This study examines the types and functions of Associative meaning on a social media platform, specifically Instagram. The writer focused on 9gag’s reaction meme posts in October and November in 2024 which intended to analyze the types and functions of associative meaning based on the theoretical foundation of G. Leech 1981. The limitation of the meme post focuses on the meme on the 9gag’s reaction meme Instagram account. The writer uses a qualitative method as a means of analyzing the data obtained based on the type and function of associative meaning according to G. Leech 1981. The writer focuses on every word, phrase or sentence that can be found in memes on Instagram and looks for associative meanings that can be interpreted from the humor presented in reaction memes that 9gag account has been posted. Then analyzed in descriptions to find the types and narration better understand the meme context. The writer found 36 data of reaction memes on 9gag accounts in October and November in 2024. The data classified as affective types are as much as 23 data finding and classified as connotative types as much as 17. Further, the reflective types are found as much as 4 data and the least data as much as 1 data of social type are found. In addition, the 26 data finding classified as expressive function, 9 data finding as phatic function and 1 data finding as informational function. It can be said that most classification are 19 data that are selected into affective types of associative meaning along with expressive as the function of the language. Therefore, this study found the most type of associative meaning is affective meaning that shows the personal feeling, attitude and tone of the speaker. Moreover, the function of language used in the meme is dominated by expressing function that shows the feeling and attitude.
