Abstract
The main objective of this study is to analyzethe kinds of translation shift in the Message in a Bottle novelwhich was translated by Sutanty as Pesan dalam Botol in Indonesian. Catford (1965:80) classified the translation shift into two major types. They are level and category shift. Category shift can be as structure, class, unit and intra system shift. This study also aims at identifying how translation shifts were applied from the novel in English into Indonesian edition and the impact of shifting on transferring messages from the source language (SL) into target language (TL). The study applies qualitative method. From the analysis of the study, it was found that there are four types of category shift occur in the novel Message in a Bottle which have been translated into Pesan dalam Botol in Indonesian. The dominant shift found in the novel is structure shift, followed by intra system shift, class shift and unit shift. Shift occursbecause English and Indonesian has different grammatical system. The findings show that translation shift is done to get a good and natural translation. Keywords : Translation, category shift, structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra system shift.
