Abstract

Intergenerational trauma is a serious problem that a lot of people are not aware of. It is highly possible for certain individuals to get inherited or transmit the trauma. This study explores the theme of intergenerational trauma in Ocean Vuong’s poetry, with a particular focus on his collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds. Through the analysis of key poems, including “Telemachus”, “Aubade with Burning City”, “Always & Forever”, and “Deto(nation)”, the study looks at how Vuong conveys the inherited traumas of war, migration, and displacement. Focusing on trauma theory, particularly Cathy Caruth's idea of trauma, the thesis examines how Vuong's lyrical language and fractured narrative structure reflect the long-term psychological impact of traumatic historical events on the younger generation. This study focuses on how Vuong portrays the weight of his family's history, especially the Vietnam War, and how these unresolved wounds of trauma depicted in the mentioned poems. The result of this study shows that Vuong’s poetry not only reflects personal grief but also powerfully represents collective intergenerational trauma, particularly through the speaker's responses to the inherited trauma that portrayed in these poems.
